The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed the information in a statement on Wednesday (May 25th). Taijul has been fined 25 per cent of the match fee for violating the ICC code of conduct. Besides, a demerit point has been added next to his name.
On the fourth day of the Mirpur Test on Wednesday, Taijul fielded his own ball in the fourth delivery of the 69th over of the Sri Lankan innings. He grabbed the ball and threw it at Mathews. Matthews suffered a hand injury from the ball. After a physio examination, however, it was reported that the injury was not serious.
However, Taijul has apologized to Mathews for the incident. However, at the end of the day’s match, the umpires made an official complaint to the match referee Chris Broad. After the allegation, Taijul pleaded guilty. If two more demerit points are added to Taijul’s name in the next 24 months, Taijul will be banned from international cricket.
Taijul Islam has yet to take a wicket in the Dhaka Test against Sri Lanka (as of the writing of this report). The left-arm Tiger spinner has taken 5 wickets in two innings in the first Test of the series.
